We wake up with a temperature of 8 °C (12 in the camper) but with a sunny sky.
We just have 7 km to drive to the Saguenay's fjord.
This fjord has been formed during the last Ice Age.
The 100km river Saguenay, is fed by the Lac St Jean on one side and by the tides of the St Laurent on the other side.
Its biodiversity attracts seals and belugas.
From its dark waters, rise majestic cliffs up to 500 m. high.
On both banks of the river lays the Saguenay National Park.
The treck we choose today takes us to the statue of Cap Trinité. This 10 km hiking trail includes a brutally long staircase that we won't forget...
But fantastic panoramas appear all along the path.
At the end of the afternoon, we head to Chicoutimi to spend the night.
Bye Bye Gaspésia, Hello Saguenay province.
We've booked our ferry ticket between Matane and Baie Comeau with "Traversier ferries" .
Before embarking we buy some of Matane's specialities :prawns and smoked salmon.
The crossing lasts two hours on the Saint Laurent's river, in a very confortable ferry. We even sight a group of belugas.
Once on the other bank we take the direction of "Les Escoumins".
In this part of Quebec, drivers don't seen to respect the speed limits !
Tadoussac is the one place outside Montreal and Quebec, that thousands of tourists want to visit, hoping to sight whales . (We first !).
Attracted by the rich fishy waters, they migrate from March to October.
Their sight is seriously ruled, whale watch boat operators have to pay a right of exploitation and their boats are not allowed to get closer than 100 meters to the creatures.
In these waters, live the fin whale, the minke whale, the beluga, the porpoise and the humpback whale.
We choose a covered boat (Neptune Company) for the two hours excursion, to avoid the spashes of à 4° water.. Our guide is very passionnate and we are lucky enough to watch a few fin whales and the majectic humpback whales.
These last ones offered us a fantastic show when diving into the depth.
We are the most happy.
We then cross the river on a ferry at Tadoussac, the first town in Quebec for furs trading in the 16th century.
The south bank of the Saguenay fjord is supposed to be the most spectacular.
That's where we go and start our first treck at the "Petit Saguenay".
Not the best one, under a grey sky!
